Teacher Leader Certificate 2

EdTechTeam Teacher Leader Certificate 2 is an extension of the Teacher Leader Cohort. In this cohort teachers will continue to learn how to make a difference in their classroom and change their learning environment.  A continued focus will be put on the ideals of Courageous Leadership, Empowerment, Student Agency, Inspiring Spaces, and an Engaged Community.

This 12-week cohort will push educators to think about how they can be mindful contributors making an impact in the world around them. Educators will continue to grow their personal learning network through collaboration and making connections with a global cohort.

Teachers will spend 2 weeks on each of the following 6 courses: Service Learning and Empathy, Reframing our thoughts around Equity: Opportunity and Access for All, Diversity: Developing and Designing A Culturally Aware Learning Environment, Courageous Connections, Supporting SEL and Wellness for All Students and a 20 Time Project based on the EdTechTeam Honeycomb.

For each course, participants will be required to spend 2 hours reading and reflecting. They will spend 4 hours completing individual activities that will build on the learning outcomes for the course and 3 hours collaborating with either cohort members or in a live hangout with experts on each topic. Each course will end with a final project that teachers will be able to take back to their classroom and immediately implement. Upon completion of the Cohort, teachers will receive an EdTechTeam Teacher Leader Certificate and can earn 6 Graduate Credits (optional and additional fee).

Course Descriptions

The following 6 courses make up the Teacher Leader Certificate. Each course is 15 hours and you will have 2 weeks to complete it.

Service Learning and Empathy

Course Description:

Service learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in, and reflect on, activities that address human and community needs. Many teachers integrate new technologies into instruction with the goal of making the learning more meaningful, motivating, and rooted in the personal interests of students as we develop empathetic and action-oriented students.

Going beyond the typical curriculum standards, it’s important for teacher leaders to instill the importance of service and empathy with students and staff. This course walks the learner through research based practices and helps create a curriculum designed to meet the needs of our “whole learners” today as we focus on student agency and community contribution.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will:

  • Redefine what Service Learning means and looks like at school
  • Deepen understanding of empathy and service learning
  • Create a school plan to implement in efforts to make an impact

Essential Question:

What is service learning and how can we encourage empathy to create a lasting impact at our schools?

Courageous Connections

Technology often gets blamed for many negative things in the world – that we are more connected to our devices but less connected to one another, just for starters.  In some instances, this may be true, but we can work to shift our perspective around how we use our devices, and focus on all the positive ways we can use our tech tools to create MORE human connection and facilitate deeper learning in our classrooms. We can work with students to use technology to inspire curiosity, engage in empathetic interactions, and create, create, create – whether it’s connections to others, stories to share, solutions to problems, or moments of joy.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will:

  • Explore the 6 C’s of Deeper Learning Competencies: Creativity, Communication, Citizenship, Critical Thinking, Character and Collaboration
  • Learn about ways to use technology tools to connect students with partner classes and content providers for powerful collaboration and learning opportunities
  • Plan a collaborative project that aims to encourage students to solve a real-world problem and make a difference

Essential Question:

How can we use global collaboration projects to teach students empathy, value of diverse perspectives, cross-cultural communication and collaboration skills, and critical thinking and problem-solving around real-world issues?

Reframing our thoughts around Equity: Opportunity and Access for All

Digital Equity has been a major concern for many years. In the Digital Equity course, you will build an understanding of what equity is, and how it affects the community in which we work. You will explore what changes you can make to transform your teaching to make the learning more equitable for all students.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will:

  • Get a better understanding of the many facets of Digital Equity
  • Participate in discussions that will allow you to determine how you can provide access and opportunity for our students.
  • Learn how to create unique learning experiences for your students that consistently involve higher order thinking skills
  • Reflect on current practices, student needs, determine a relatable goal and devise a personalized plan that provides unique opportunities for all students.

Essential Question:
As education leaders, how can reframe our thoughts around digital equity in order to make realistic and relevant changes in our classrooms and the opportunities we provide for our students?

Diversity: Developing and Designing a Culturally Aware Learning Environment

Diversity is understanding the differences that involve recognizing one's beliefs, intercultural dynamics, and valuing diverse backgrounds. In this course, you will gain a deeper understanding that diversity is just not about race or gender but encompassing complex differences and similarities in perspectives, identities, and point of views that are needed to teach and interact in a diverse teaching environment.

Learning Outcomes:

Students Will:

  • Get a better understanding of the many facets of Diversity.
  • Develop a community of resources to help better teach in a diverse environment.
  • Learn how to recognize our own unconscious bias.
  • Learn how to create unique learning experiences that include all students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Reflect on current practices, students needs, determine a relatable goal to reach all individuals in learning environment.

Essential Question:

What is Diversity and how will you as an educator grasp a better understanding of diversity and how it plays an integral part in our communities, classrooms, and society as a whole.


Supporting SEL and Wellness for All Students

Course Description:

Through this course, educators will explore the core competencies of social emotional learning (SEL), analyze the connection between SEL and student learning outcomes, and identify strategies and activities designed to develop student confidence and skills through the use of instructional technology and offline activities.

Learning Outcomes: 

Students will: 

  1. Recognize the importance of SEL to student learning outcomes
  2. Integrate the 5 core competencies into classroom instruction
  3. See an improved attitude in their students about self, others, and schools
  4. Immediately implement effective SEL supports in their classroom
  5. Collaborate and Communicate with other members of the online course to share learning

Essential Question: 

How might educators apply the core competencies of SEL to support all students in their classrooms?

20 Time Project

During this 2 week course, you will be doing a 20 Time Project. Cohort members will choose a topic or project they would like to pursue. They will submit a proposal, research the topic, and create a pitch for their idea or topic. Each participant will need to find a way to share what they learned. At the close of the cohort- we will have a showcase of the 20 Time projects.

Graduate Credit

Earn 6 Graduate Credits from Adams State University for completing all 6 courses in the Teacher Leader Certificate. An additional $450 is required for Graduate Credit.
